Making Complex Glucose Data Actionable for Athletes

Supersapiens partnered with Abbott to bring the first continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) platform to competitive athletes. While the technology was groundbreaking, athletes struggled to derive actionable insights from complex glucose data.

Key User Problems

Contextualization: Athletes couldn't understand glucose data or make sense of measured outcomes in relation to their training schedules and daily activities.

Progress Evaluation: Users had no baseline for what "good" glucose management looked like, making it impossible to track improvements.

One-Dimensional Insights: Data was presented in isolation without synthesizing relationships between glucose, sleep, training, and recovery.

Personalization: Athletes at different training levels couldn't prioritize focus areas based on their maturity and goals.

The business challenge was equally critical: how do you scale a highly technical product across multiple platforms (mobile, web, wearable integrations) while maintaining FDA compliance requirements and managing limited resources?

Daily Glucose Visibility

The core challenge was translating continuous glucose monitoring data into meaningful insights. Athletes needed to see not just their glucose levels, but understand the relationship between training, fueling, and recovery.

The 24-hour stability meter became the foundation for all subsequent features, providing a simple visual representation of complex physiological data.

A Strategic Four-Phase Product Vision

I developed a phased rollout strategy that transformed complex glucose data into progressive, digestible insights. Each phase built upon the previous, creating a scaffolded learning experience that grew with the athlete's understanding.

01

Contextualize

Help athletes understand their data

  • Athlete calendar alignment
  • Daily metrics summary
  • Event lists & tracking
02

Personalize

Enable progress evaluation

  • Stability meter
  • Zones & baselines
  • Trend analysis
  • Keyframe reports
03

Synthesize

Connect multi-dimensional insights

  • Sleep analysis
  • Data alignments
  • Reference frames
04

Customize

Personalized goal tracking

  • Advanced preferences
  • Active view (keyhole)
  • Goals & achievements

Each phase was carefully designed to introduce complexity gradually, ensuring athletes could build understanding before adding new dimensions of analysis. The strategy balanced immediate value delivery with long-term platform capabilities.

Strategic Roadmap & Execution

I led the development of comprehensive product roadmaps spanning mobile apps, web portal, and third-party integrations. The strategy balanced immediate business needs with long-term product vision while managing FDA submission requirements.

Q3 2022 - Phase 1: Contextualize (v3.0)

Launched daily view & event analytics, glucose coaching, and calendar integration. Coordinated Wahoo Bolt/Roam integrations as critical launch dependencies.

Q4 2022 - Phase 2: Personalize (v3.1-3.2)

Introduced stability meter, trends, baselines, and keyframe reports. Added Garmin 955 Solar integration and enhanced account services.

Q1 2023 - Phase 3: Synthesize (v3.3-3.4)

Delivered sleep analysis, timeline artifacts, and daily phase analysis. Launched team management tools and expanded tracking metrics.

Q2 2023 - Phase 4: Customize

Planned food profiling, pantry recommendations, CGM live mode, and community features. Designed for maximum engagement and retention.

Cross-Functional Coordination

Managed complex partner integrations with Abbott (biosensor provider), Garmin (wearables), Wahoo (bike computers), and MyFitnessPal (nutrition tracking). Coordinated FDA submission requirements while maintaining aggressive product development timelines.

B2B2C Strategy

Built affiliate partner portal enabling nutritionists and coaches to manage multiple athletes, place bulk orders, and access shared resources. This B2B2C strategy opened new revenue streams while enhancing the core product's value proposition for individual athletes.

Platform Integrations

Phase 1 Success: The Contextualize release in Fall 2022 drove immediate sales growth by making glucose data understandable and actionable for the first time. Athletes could finally see how their training impacted recovery and vice versa.

Platform Scalability: Established dual-track product management framework in Jira that enabled parallel development across mobile, web, and integrations while managing FDA compliance requirements.

Partner Ecosystem: Successfully coordinated major integrations with Garmin (Epix, 955 Solar), Wahoo (Bolt, Roam), and established foundation for future partnerships with Oura Ring and Apple HealthKit.

Operational Efficiency: Implemented multi-tier support triage and automated reporting systems that reduced overhead while scaling the platform to support growing user base.

Strategic Insights

Phased rollouts reduce risk: Breaking complex product visions into progressive releases allowed us to validate assumptions, gather user feedback, and adjust strategy while maintaining development momentum.

Scaffolded learning drives adoption: By introducing features in a logical progression (Contextualize → Personalize → Synthesize → Customize), we reduced cognitive load and improved feature adoption rates.

Partner coordination is critical: Managing dependencies across Abbott (biosensor), Garmin/Wahoo (integrations), and FDA (regulatory) required proactive communication and flexible roadmap planning.

Dual-track agile enables speed: Implementing parallel discovery and delivery tracks allowed us to maintain aggressive timelines while ensuring quality and strategic alignment.
